Daughters of the King

Daughters of the King

Interest & Information Classes – December 8 & January 12 after the 10:30 service in the library

All women, or anyone identifying as a woman, who think they may be interested in becoming a Daughter of the King are invited to join one or both of these informational classes. On Dec. 8, we will have refreshments and an Advent craft activity called Praying in Color.

Are You Called to Become a Daughter?

The only spiritual attribute needed to become a Daughter is a sincere desire to draw nearer to God and to help others do the same. Daughters are women striving to fulfill the promises of their Baptismal Covenant through the adoption of a Rule of Life: • To continue in the Apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers. • To persevere in resisting evil, and when we fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord. • To proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ. • To seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself. • To strive for justice and peace among all people and respect the dignity of every human being.

The Order of the Daughters of the King® (DOK) is an intergenerational community of women who desire a closer walk with the Lord, and who are strengthened through the discipline of a Rule of Life and supported by the companionship of other women. DOK members work, study, pray, and play together, supporting our church and living their own Baptismal vows. DOK’s vision statement is “to know Jesus Christ, to make Him known to others, and to become reflections of God’s love throughout the world.”

Our chapter is named the Deborah chapter. It was chartered in September 2015; read the story of the institution of this chapter.

St. Martin’s DOK chapter meets monthly on the fourth Sundays at noon in the library, located in the large parish hall, and it is open to all women or those who identify as woman. We take a vow of prayer, service, and evangelism. If you would like more information about the DOK, please contact chapter president, Claire Abraham at claire.abraham@stmartininthefields.org.

On Sunday, February 3, 2019 we received our new banner, which was blessed by our former rector, Fr. Scot McComas.

Vestry Minutes August 16, 2020

ST. MARTIN-IN-THE-FIELDS VESTRY MEETING
August 16, 2020
Present:  Bob Bess, Bob Garrity, D.J. Mitchell, Kristy Pemberton, the Very Rev. Ron Pogue (Interim Rector), Linda Seeber, Ben Taylor, Christopher DeClerk, Becky Snell, Julie Sutton
This meeting of the Vestry of St. Martin-in-the-Fields Episcopal Church was held Sunday, August 16, 2020, virtually via zoom meeting. The meeting was opened with prayer by the Very Rev. Ron Pogue at 12:30 p.m.
Also Present:  Ayo Omoniyi, Paula Jefferson, and Gary Wilkinson
Consideration of Vestry Minutes from previous meetings:
Minutes from the July 19, 2020 meeting were approved as distributed.
School Update:
The only item to report was that we will have boxes of files that will need to be shredded. It was suggested we have a church-wide shred to quantify the cost of the truck coming out. It will be decided at a later date.
Finance Committee Report:
The committee met on August 15, 2020

  • Audit Review:

The audit occurred in the Parish Hall at SMIF. There are two recommendations:

  • Bank recs – the months reviewed were October and December. The general fund did not match and it was discovered that a voided check was missing. Sue Mitchell did a manual entry and corrected the error. There was also a missing donation and it was a timing difference in the ledger.
  • Annual Meeting – The combined statement of revenue should be comprehensive.

The audit has been forwarded to the Diocese for filing.
The draft for the finance committee charter has been completed and sent to the Interim Rector.

  • Endowment fund update:

The committee had been formed but due to COVID has caused this to be on hold. It was decided that we would wait until after consecration Sunday to reconvene on this. It was brought to our attention that at least one member of the finance committee must be on the team.

  • Phone lines:

The church currently has 3 phone lines, one of which is used for the school. When the budget is prepared for 2021 this will be looked at to see if money can be saved.

  • PO Box update:

It is up and running now. It was suggested that we post this info in several places as well as an email blast letting the congregation know of the change as well as update the website with this info.
Treasurer’s Report
All were given copies of the budget and treasurer’s report. The focus was on month expenses and unrestricted funds. Things are status quo for now, pledges are continuing to come in on or above plan.

  • Cleaning expenses increased slightly. The cleaning contract is currently under review to see if we need to continue.
  • Utilities are up 300.00 but should be going back down since the school has closed.
  • Bob Bess will be replacing some thermostats; they are causing the air to run longer than programmed.
  • The government loan forgiveness expires in September and we are budgeting according to the plan.
  • As a reminder, the church will now take 100% of the costs now that the school is closed, we used to share them.
  • Julie Sutton asked if we would be cancelling the cleaning and have the church congregation start a rotation schedule. DJ Mitchell advised that we are budgeted to continue through the 2020 fiscal year. With COVID currently restricting gatherings, it’s best it is kept this way.
  • Financial and Treasurer’s Report Approved:
    • Becky Snell moved to approve the financial report and treasures report as presented, Linda Seeber seconded. All approved the report as distributed.

Stewardship Report

  • Consecration Sunday is scheduled for October 4th the committee will ask members of the Vestry to do handwritten thank you notes again this year.
  • August 23rd – Starting the live videos and speakers. This will continue every Sunday until September 27th when DJ Mitchell will give the 1 step presentation.
  • Lunch will be provided by Jason’s Deli and will include, a turkey, ham, veggie and gluten free options. It was suggested by Christopher DeClerk that an option to pass on food be given. Not everyone will be able to partake due to dietary concerns.
  • The service will be streamed live for those that are not comfortable attending in person.
  • The save the date will be mentioned in the next email blast.
  • Mullaney suggested we run the gathering by the re-entry committee to make sure safety protocols are being met.
  • Becky Snell also brought up that she will be updating the VPIC assignments since we are now doing parking lot services. So far the schedule is covered through September. This will be re-visited during the October meeting for the remainder of the 2020 calendar year.

Senior Warden update:
Keen Haynes attended the Horizon Stewardship zoom conference and more will be coming later from his meeting.
Junior Warden update:

  • The new A/C thermostats were mentioned in above under Financial committee report.
  • Plugs have been installed for the security system, all that needs to be done now is to fire up the system and see what is working.
  • Bess will investigate a new system that can be controlled and monitored online or on an app.
  • Father Ron will have a separate meeting with the Junior wardens to discuss the structural soundness of our facility.

Curate Report

  • Paula Jefferson is continuing to work with the Pastoral Care team with Becky Snell as Convenor. Many calls are being made weekly including hospice calls via facetime or zoom meetings.
  • She attended the Beloved Community Conference regarding racism and the church as a whole and it was very enlightening.
  • A zoom movie night is still in the works for kids age 8-12. The Vestry feels this is so important with school activities and quarantine continuing.
  • She attended the same stewardship meeting as Keen Haynes and Fr. Pogue and said some ideas are coming forward for narratives so the congregation can understand the annual meetings better.

Interim Rector’s Report

  • Holy conversations are beginning, the Search Committee is attending and the Vestry is encouraged to attend as well.
  • Becky Snell suggested that In the past members of the congregation have been invited to attend Vestry meetings but that that stopped. She wanted to know if that was still an option for folks. They are and an email blast will go out soon reminding people they may attend.
  • Becky Snell also asked why Vestry minutes were no longer posted on the website. Mary Beth Butler will work with Anika to get them up to date.
  • Father Ron mentioned the two new raised beds on the north side are ready for planting and reminded us that a special link will be sent out so Vestry and Rector Search Committee can watch the Zoom briefing with the Holy Cow representative.

Adjournment and Closing Prayer:
The Meeting was adjourned with prayer by Bob Bess. Special prayer was offered for all school teachers and students as face-to-face classes will begin soon.
NEXT REGULAR VESTRY MEETING WILL BE SUNDAY, September 20th, 2020 AT 12:30 PM VIRTUALLY ON ZOOM.
Respectfully submitted,
Kristy Pemberton
Clerk

Scouting at St. Martin’s

Scouting at St. Martin’s

St. Martin’s has sponsored scouting since the mid 1990’s and is proud to continue the tradition! We are an open and welcoming community where all are welcome. Our scouting programs are open to boys and girls and we would love to have your family join us!

Cub Scout Pack 937
Cub Scouts are for boys and girls starting Kindergarten through Fifth Grade.

Pack 937 was newly formed in 2018 and continues to grow! The pack has enjoyed numerous outings, family campouts, pack advancements, and much support and leadership from the parish of St. Martin’s and Troop 937. The Cubs have gained life long experiences and friendships by various activities such as camping, hiking, fishing, visiting the fire department, and even doing a little fundraising. The pack looks forward to another amazing start of the year with pack expansion for the 20-21 school year in full swing! Cubs will participate in various activities with Troop 937 with Adopt a Street, (clearing litter off streets) and most recently, the Good News Garden project at St.Martin’s, and many more fun and adventurous activities!

While it looks a little different this year, the mission still remains the same: Family Focused, Value Driven, Do your Best, and Have Fun doing it! Pack 937 welcomes boys and girls! From the BSA: Cub Scouting nurtures leadership and character growth, strengthens families, helps develop interests and skills, provides adventure, creates fellowship, promotes diversity, teaches duty to God and country (a scout is Reverent), and last but not least- is FUN! If you have a Kinder-5th grader that is interested in joining the Pack, please contact Cubmaster Christopher DeClerk at cdsmitf@twc.com. Annual program dues are only $75 and we have scholarships available. Nobody will be left behind!

Pack 937 Upcoming Events:
September 13 2020, Noon-2pm- physically distanced pool party and calendar scheduling day: bring your child, swim, and roast and eat hot dogs and s’mores over an open fire! While there, mark your calendar for upcoming pack events including the Raingutter Regatta and Pinewood Derby, camping, hiking and joint events with Troop 937. Please contact Cubmaster Christopher DeClerk at cdsmitf@twc.com to rsvp!
Den and Pack meetings will be scheduled at the pool party.
October 17-18: Family Campout at Hickory Creek: Oct. 17-18th. We will enjoy the outdoors separated with families in their own tents separated from one another. We have two 75’ deep campsites reserved with water and electricity, across from a restroom, so definitely family friendly. In the evening we’ll roast hot dogs and s’mores over an open fire, sing songs, tell stories, and see some great skits that the scouts put on. Sunday morninfg we will show our reverence to God in an outdoor service. It will be a weekend to build memories that will last a lifetime! Contact Cubmaster Christopher DeClerk cdsmitf@twc.com for more information and to rsvp!
Upcoming… Pinewood Derby, Raingutter Regatta, Spring Campout, and Blue and Gold Banquet.
Scouts BSA Troop 937:
Scouts BSA is for youth in sixth grade until age 18 or for fifth graders who have completed their Arrow of Light.

Troop 937 was established in the mid 90’s and has grown into a very successful and close knit troop. At Troop 937, we recognize the many demands youth face today. Part of its success can be attributed to supporting a balance between Scouting and the various other responsibilities including academics, athletics, music, theater, church, family and simple down time. We encourage the boys to participate in most troop meetings and our monthly activities. However, we understand that there will be schedule conflicts and other commitments. Troop 937 is made up of neighboring communities of Southlake, Keller, Colleyville, Grapevine, Roanoke and Trophy Club. As a result of our unique geographic mix, the troop develops lasting inter school friendships that would not ordinarily occur. Our troop welcomes diversity in youth and leaders. Although we currently do not have a Girls BSA program, we would love to start any time there’s interest!

Bread Ministry – Give a warm welcome!

Bread Ministry – Give a warm welcome!

photo of bread baker at St. Martin-in-the-Fields Episcopal Church
The Bread Ministry is an important part of St. Martin’s mission of radical hospitality. Members bake bread to share with new guests at our church, along with a little information about our church and worship services. The bread ministry strives to let newcomers know that we are very glad they chose to be with us, and that we hope they will become a part of our church community.
The bread ministry group feels that the love and hospitality shown to newcomers by baking bread reflects the Christian belief that is embodied in the phrase “do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” [Matthew 7:12]
Bread bakers will bake several loaves of bread & bring them to church. Some of the bread is also used to help feed the homeless through our Service Sunday ministry for Union Gospel Mission.

This ministry has a very valuable place in our church, and many families have responded that they really felt welcome at St. Martin’s because of the wonderful bread that was shared with them! If you would like to be a part of this ministry, please contact Flo Lowrey at lowrey.flo@gmail.com.

Holy Mowers

Holy Mowers

The Holy Mowers are a group of men and women who mow, edge, trim, and maintain the majority of the church landscape to make the church grounds welcoming.
Each weekend a team meets to mow and edge. If you can spend a couple of hours once a month doing yardwork with other team members, please contact Chris Mullaney at lucky_charms4077@yahoo.com or  Rex Angle at rex.angle@bnsf.com.

Ushers

Ushers

We’re currently practicing Drive-In Worship each Sunday at 10:30 am. Ushers are needed to direct parking, and to help with passing out consecrated communion cups, pass the plate, etc. If you would like to be a part of this ministry, please contact Kerry Angle at kkangle@prodigy.net.
St. Martin’s ushers greet worshipers, assist with seating, take a head count, bring the bread and wine to the table, guide people to Holy Communion, and provide other in-service hospitality during worship.
Get involved: Anyone interested in taking part in this ministry would be very welcome! Please speak with Rex or Kerry Angle if you would like further information, or send an email to kkangle@prodigy.net.

Be a gift bearer! We’d like to invite families to help us prepare for communion by bringing our gifts of bread & wine forward to the table. If you would like to participate, please talk to Kerry Angle or speak to an usher when you enter the church before any service. Or you may contact Kerry Angle at kkangle@prodigy.net.

Spiritual Awareness

Spiritual Awareness

The Spiritual Awareness group meets weekly on Thursdays at 10:30 am in the Rector’s Study.

Members share and listen to each others’ “faith story” and how they see God working in their lives, most especially in the week that has passed. Meetings begin and end with prayer. Each person may share if they wish. Sometimes we just come to listen.

We have been meeting as a group for many years. The membership remains in a state of flux as people come and go. It is open to both men and women, and attendance each week is not required. Come when you can.

Over the years we have developed a keen sense of intimacy and trust. We are sharing the most precious part of ourselves, which is our spiritual journey. We ask that “what is said in the room, stays in the room.” We are accepting of where we all are on the journey; we don’t try to “fix” anyone’s theology or be critical of any beliefs. It truly is an opportunity to share in a respectful environment.

We’re not a prayer group, although we pray for each other; we are not a support group, although we support each other. Sharing our spirituality is our purpose.

We can guarantee that you will be welcomed by the group. Please come and give us a try! For more information or to RSVP to any Thursday, please contact us at spiritual-awareness@stmartininthefields.org.
