In his sermon on the first Sunday of Advent, the Rev. Christopher Thomas takes us on a little journey. It begins with the artist Richard Serra, whose work is all about getting you to step outside of time and reality. Father Chris then goes into the journey we are looking at now – the journey of Advent with the destination of the manger and the coming of the Christ child. In our contemporary times, this particular journey is fraught with anxiety, driven by capitalism. But there is another journey afoot…one that Jesus discusses in our Gospel reading. That of the second coming. Father Chris tells us that we as the human race have been given the gift of time, between Jesus’ birth and his coming again. To prepare, we must take a journey inside ourselves. But we can all journey together.
