Wet weather didn’t dampen spirits on Sunday, November 29 for the Feast of St. Nicholas. Children, tweens and teens enjoyed lessons about St. Nicholas and had a grand time making bishop hats and playing games. Children placed their shoes in baskets during Sunday school. They learned that St. Nicholas was known for placing gold coins in the shoes of the poor. Our young children were delighted to return to the school building later to find their shoes filled with gold coins!
Folks packed the blue hall for potluck goodies and grabbed Advent wreaths to celebrate the season at home, counting down the days until Christmas. Children were invited to listen to Claire Abraham, a gifted storyteller, recount the story of St. Nicholas. Using shoes, scarves, coins and treasure, she delighted the children. At the end of the story, the children were asked to be just like St. Nicholas and help others.
Even St. Martin’s library was on display, being recently refreshed by Claire Abraham and many others helping fill bookshelves with books. It was a great way to kick off the Advent season. The celebration continues this Sunday, December 6 with the Advent Fest held at noon in the school building featuring live music, “Advent in a box” and hot cocoa and cookies.
