FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Here you will find answers to frequently asked questions newcomers and guests have about St. Martin’s and worship at Episcopal churches in general.

What should I expect on my first visit?

Expect a smiling face to greet you at the door at Saturday or Sunday worship services. Please know that we understand that people want to feel welcomed but not pressured on their first visit to a new church. We have greeters who will help you find your way around. They will assist you to the restrooms and nursery and Sunday school locations. After the 10:30 am Sunday services we have refreshments, usually coffee and donuts. You are invited to join us in a friendly atmosphere for learning about others.

What can I expect during an Episcopal worship service?

Episcopal churches in the United States use the Book of Common Prayer to guide their worship. As such, we have traditional worship with hymns, scripture, and a short homily (sermon). St. Martin’s makes following worship easy by providing a service bulletin at each service that details the entire service.

Who can take communion in your church?

The principal worship service in the Episcopal Church is called the Holy Eucharist (also called Holy Communion). Every person who joins with us in worship, and is prepared in their own conscience to receive Christ in this way, is welcome to share in the bread and wine of Holy Communion with us. This is a symbolic meal around a table, just like the disciples shared with Jesus at the Last Supper. Visitors who do not wish to receive communion may come to the altar rail to receive a blessing from the clergy. No matter where you are on your journey of faith, you are welcome at this table.

How can the church get to know me better?

At the announcements before the service, you will be asked to fill out a “Tell Us About You” card. This card does not automatically sign you up for anything. It simply asks for your name and address and information about your family, and it does ask if you want to receive our communications. It’s purpose is to alert us to your interest in St. Martin’s, whatever shape that may take, and helps us make sure you get the information you need.

Do you have childcare for infants and toddlers?

Yes, at some services. The nursery is open for our 10:30 am Sunday worship services to serve children from infancy to 3 years. Our nursery workers are trained and qualified personnel. Childcare is also offered for many events at St. Martin’s and its availability is published. You can always call the church office to inquire.

What programs are available for children?

Children of all ages are welcome during all services. The first Sunday of every month, our worship is centered around our children, and children will be invited up around the altar during the celebration of the Eucharist so they can see what goes on. During the school year, Sunday School for children 3 years through 12th grade is offered during the 10:30 service, with children rejoining their parents for the Eucharist. During the summer, we offer children’s chapel during the 10:30 service three Sundays a month; children are invited to follow the cross to chapel for hands-on learning, and they rejoin their parents in time for the Eucharist.

What’s your music like?

Music is an eclectic mix of traditional and more contemporary genres, led by choir, accompanied by piano and organ. On special days, we have musical offerings like drums or guitar or string and wind ensemble. No electronic bands, though; our music is not that kind of contemporary. If you love music, learn more about our choir!

How can I learn about opportunities to get involved?
St. Martin’s is a vibrant community with a wide variety of ways for you to share your time and talent. On the back of the blue Communication Card in the pew rack there are interest areas that you can check, and a ministry leader will contact you about your interest. Our Christian education offerings are listed under the website Learn menu. We have numerous programs and ministries available for opportunities to serve, listed on our Serve page. We’d love to connect you to ways that God is calling you to serve.
