Holy Week & Easter

These are exciting times in the life of the church: Holy Week and Easter. Lent reaches its climax during Holy Week, itself a journey within a journey. The pace of the liturgical year seems to slow down from Maundy Thursday to Easter, as we recall the stages of Christ’s passing from this world. It is a solemn passage through loneliness, betrayal, injustice, and suffering. It’s a movement from life to death to life again. Join us during Holy Week with worship experiences that follow Jesus into Jerusalem.

Palm Sunday – Regular times of worship

Palm Sunday commemorates Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem and subsequent trial and crucifixion. At our three Palm Sunday services, we will participate in reading a story that narrates Jesus’ walk  to the cross, and we will share Holy Communion. Join us for one of our festive services:

  • 5:00 pm Saturday with incense outside of the church.
  • 8:30 am Sunday with incense outside of the church.
  • 10:30 am Sunday with incense. This service will start in the school building and process with waving palms into the church. Children and teens will process and follow the children’s cross back to Sunday School in the school building. Children and teens will rejoin their parents in the sanctuary for Holy Communion. Nursery is available.

Maundy Thursday

Just before entering on the road of his passion, Jesus washed the feet of his disciples as a sign of his love and service, and then offered them his body and blood as food and drink. These two acts belong together – they are both an expression of God’s determination to show us the fullness of his love.

  • 7:00 pm Foot washing, Holy Communion, stripping the altar, watch at the altar of repose in the chapel.
  • 8:30 pm – sunrise Vigil at the altar of repose – We keep vigil overnight at the altar in the chapel, surrounded by flowers in an indoor garden, as Jesus invited his disciples to stay with him and watch and pray in Gethsemane. Use the sign up sheet in the back of church, or call the office at 817-431-2396.

Good Friday

On Good Friday, we remember Christ’s crucifixion and death. Through the cross Jesus paid the price, not so we would not have to, but so that we would in fact know that there is a price for truth and love: everything.

  • Noon Stations of the Cross – Walk to each station in the sanctuary with a group, look at the images of what Jesus experienced on his way to the cross, hear the narrative, and pray the prayers together. This is a faithful, powerful, memorable experience.
  • 5:30 pm Good Friday Family Worship – Come and worship in a short and memorable service especially created to help explain God’s great love for all of us in a way that young children can understand. All ages are welcome to explore faith at interactive stations, share simple prayers and hear a message about God’s great love. Share Holy Communion from the reserved sacrament.
  • 7:00 pm Good Friday worship using the Book of Common Prayer; Holy Communion from the reserved sacrament.

Holy Saturday

Join us for the first service of Easter in a service with ancient roots in Jewish-Christian practices, and experience fire, word, water, and table in one of the most solemn, joyous, symbol-rich services of the Christian year.

  • 7:45 pm – 10:00 pm The Great Vigil of Easter (with incense).
