Bishop Rayford High worshipped with St. Martin’s on Sunday, May 5, 2013. The younger children of the parish sang in the service, and then Bishop High explained to them about the symbolism of his crozier (shepherd’s crook), his mitre (hat) and bishop’s ring. He preached to the adults, too. Most importantly, the bishop confirmed & received a large group of people ranging in age from teenagers to senior citizens.
Confirmation, as defined in The Book of Common Prayer is “a mature public affirmation of faith and commitment to the responsibilities of Baptism.” In being confirmed or received, the bishop lays hands upon a person, affirming their own faith and visibly connecting them to the broader Body of Christ.
The parish celebrated with a reception after the service, and Bishop High met with the vestry.
