Stewardship 2012
by Mandee Nuttall
When I consider stewardship, I most often turn to Luke 12:48, “For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required.” Truth be told, what immediately comes to mind is usually a similar quote in a popular Spiderman movie, “With great power comes great responsibility.” My imperfect understanding of stewardship is not limited to the management of monetary resources – it also encompasses time management and how we relate to the world.
My most compelling and present exercise in stewardship is parenthood. At first I was struck by the wonder of it all – a tiny, helpless person comes into the world and continues to grow and hit milestones. But inevitably, wonder often leads to exasperation as it becomes apparent that the tiny person is born with his own set of agendas. Still, my most powerful reminder of the importance of good stewardship occurs when I simply remember that the child – who lives in my home and occupies nearly every moment of my day – was never even mine at all. I am humbled to be given such a charge.
